Traditional new year fireworks light up Hong Kong skyline as city rings in 2024

Hongkongers rang in 2024 with a bang, as tourism authorities presented the traditional new year countdown fireworks display in its full capacity for the first time since 2018. The Hong Kong Tourism Board said the 12-minute “pyromusical” show was the “biggest and longest” countdown fireworks ever staged in the city. The last time Hongkongers could enjoy a countdown fireworks display was in 2018. The show was cancelled because of social unrest amid anti-government demonstrations in 2019. It did not return in subsequent years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year’s countdown event featured only a multimedia light show with laser beams and pyrotechnics mounted on buildings around Victoria Park.
