Hong Kong has undergone major changes since the former British colony returned to Chinese rule on July 1, 1997. From closer economic integration with mainland China to the upheaval of the 2019 protests, the city has evolved and adapted during times of opportunity and uncertainty. A quarter of a century since, and halfway through the period of promised autonomy, the next chapter is ready to be written.
