Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor has defended a recent police raid on local newspaper Apple Daily. At a press conference on June 22, 2021, Lam responded to a question about the international outcry following the Jun 17 raid and arrests of the tabloid's editor-in-chief and four others who now face charges of foreign collusion under national security law imposed on the city by mainland China. Lam said US condemnation of the incident was an attempt to “beautify acts” that undermine national security. Apple Daily is an anti-Beijing publication that has supported Hong Kong's anti-government protest movement.
