The not-for-profit Music Children Foundation has been offering free music programmes since 2013 to about 5,000 underprivileged Hong Kong youths. Among them is eight-year-old Chu Wing-yan, who lives with her parents in local public housing. Wing-yan has been taking classes there since 2019, but the pandemic forced her to stop attending classes for over six months. Unable to practise without a violin, her instructor came up with a novel idea: a makeshift instrument made from a lemon-tea carton and 11 pencils.
