Hong Kong’s divided political camps competed in a neck-and-neck battle for the Kowloon West district on November 25, 2018. Pro-Beijing candidate Chan Hoi-yan won the by-election with 106,457 votes, beating veteran pan-democrat Lee Cheuk-yan, who got 93,047. Chan, a former journalist and political assistant, denies having support from Beijing’s liaison office, which represents the Chinese central government in the city.
