Chung, 59, lost his seat on the Eastern District Council last year, after holding the post for more than two decades. Elected a lawmaker in 2012 and an outspoken member of the pro-establishment camp, he was often ridiculed by rivals for his mistakes in English and use of Chinese idioms.
He told the Post he would assess this month whether he could be re-elected as an independent.
“I will quit DAB if my assessment proves that I can win,” even if that meant triggering a rift within the party, said Chung.
