A US judge has temporarily blocked plans to put thousands of employees of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on paid leave as part of a major overhaul that some say effectively abolishes the aid agency. The freezing of US humanitarian aid under the Trump administration has left thousands of charities and non-profit organisations, including those in Asia, in limbo. Washington’s primary agency for foreign aid, USAID allocated US$860 million in 2024 to Southeast Asia, where it operates in six out of 11 countries in the region.
