Japanese Emperor Naruhito said his birthday wishes include hopes for a “bright future” as the country’s coronavirus inoculation programme gets under way. Speaking to reporters four days before his 61st birthday on February 23, 2021, the emperor also expressed condolences to those who have lost family members and friends to the coronavirus pandemic.
