A massive mudslide and flash flood struck the Gyirong Port area along the China-Nepal border on Wednesday, leaving scores missing and over a thousand missing across both sides of the divide. The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that a catastrophic ice-rock avalanche, which originally registered as a tectonic earthquake, turned into a debris flow and mudslide, sweeping down the river valley and unleashing devastating floodwaters.
