Chinese mathematicians Wang Hong and Deng Yu win prestigious Fields Medal

The pair are the first Chinese nationals to win the ‘Nobel Prize of mathematics’.

Chinese mathematicians Wang Hong and Deng Yu have won the Fields Medal, known as the “Nobel Prize of mathematics”. Only two other ethnic Chinese mathematicians have won the honour before: Yau Shing-tung in 1982 and Terence Tao in 2006, but neither held Chinese citizenship at the time they were named winners.
