At least 8 people have died after thunderstorms battered central China’s Hubei province. Home to around 58 million people, cities in the region were lashed by winds of up to 149 km/h (93 mph). Nearby provinces, including Guangxi, Jiangsu and Shandong, have been warned to brace for heavy rain in the next 24 hours.
