China’s People’s Liberation Army test-fired a missile from a nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific on Monday, in what the foreign ministry called a “routine exercise.” But the test drew criticism and concern from the US, Australia and Japan. The test was China’s first known submarine-based missile test since 1982, and the first known to have been fired from a nuclear-powered submarine.
