Winter economy becomes poster child for China’s bid to grow services industry

China is betting big on its emerging “ice and snow” economy. The sector has enjoyed a boom since Beijing hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics and the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions in 2023. The move is part of a plan to spur consumer demand by redirecting investment away from infrastructure projects, such as transport and housing, and into the services sector.
