Chinese President Xi Jinping held a rare meeting on February 17, 2025, with some of the biggest names in China's private sector primarily involved in technology and advanced manufacturing. The first such gathering since 2018 came in the wake of Beijing’s regulatory clampdown on the tech industry a few years ago. While Xi assured the group they could expect persistent support and wider market access, he urged them to contribute more to the country’s tech innovation amid intensifying rivalry with the United States. Among the attendees were Huawei Technologies founder Ren Zhengfei, Xiaomi’s Lei Jun, BYD’s Wang Chuanfu, Unitree’s Wang Xingxing and Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba Group, which owns the South China Morning Post.
