Chinese President Xi Jinping has renewed calls for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and pledged more humanitarian aid for Gaza. Xi made the remarks on May 30, 2024, in a speech at the opening ceremony of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum in Beijing. Addressing the heads of state of Bahrain, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Tunisia, as well as foreign ministers from other Arab League countries, Xi said that the war in the Middle East “cannot continue indefinitely”. He also pledged to deepen ties with Arab states, amid a push to court a region where Washington has long been a dominant power.
