Reports that 23 Chinese swimmers had failed drug testing weeks before the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and were allowed to compete anyway, have sparked a major row within the sport. The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) said it was aware of the incident and accepted China’s explanation that the tests had been contaminated. But anti-doping officials in the United States have accused Wada of a cover-up.
