China christened and launched its first large roll-on roll-off, or ro-ro ship for vehicle exports in Shanghai on December 4, 2023, as the country’s shipbuilding is playing catch-up to the overseas expeditions of Chinese automakers. The “Jiuyang Blossom”, made in Croatia and bought from a Norwegian company for US$63 million, can haul in excess of 7,000 vehicles in one sail. It will ferry Chinese cars to far-flung destinations, in a hope to quench some of the rising demand, according to a press release by Beijing-based Changjiu Logistics, the ship’s new operator.
