Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has called on Beijing to develop a “mutually acceptable foundation” for a path to “peaceful coexistence” with the island, as she sought to ease cross-strait hostilities before stepping down in 2024. In her last Double Tenth Day address on October 10, 2023, Tsai said that “Peace is the only option” and that maintaining the status quo was key to ensuring peace. Beijing views Taiwan as its territory that must be united with the mainland, by force if necessary. It has vowed to attack the self-ruled island if it dares to change the status quo by declaring formal independence. Most countries, including the United States, do not recognise Taiwan as an independent state, but are opposed to any unilateral change of the cross-strait status quo by force.
