Chinese President Xi Jinping met a six-person delegation of American senators, led by US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, in Beijing on October 9, 2023. Xi said during the meeting that the future of China-US relations would impact the “destiny of mankind”. The meeting was seen as a strong sign that Xi may attend the Apec summit in San Francisco in November, when the Chinese and US leaders could hold face-to-face talks. The American delegation’s trip was the first US congressional visit to China since 2019.
