Mainland China’s People’s Liberation Army staged a military drill around Taiwan on August 19, 2023, one day after Taiwanese Vice-President William Lai Ching-te returned from his Paraguay trip which included a stopover in the US. The PLA described the joint drill involving its air force and navy as a “severe warning to separatist forces”. A front runner in Taiwan’s coming presidential elections, Lai stopped over in New York and San Francisco during his week-long trip. Beijing has issued an angry statement accusing Lai of “conspiring” to promote Taiwan independence.
