Beijing-based tattoo artist Song Jiayin starts each pre-tattoo interview with a simple icebreaker, “what’s your sign?” But what follows is a moving conversation about women’s reasons for getting tattooed, which Song says is a form of empowerment and self-expression in an increasingly conservative China.
