‘I was doing well at home’: Chinese film star Fan Bingbing returns to cinema in Berlin

Chinese movie star Fan Bingbing has returned to the spotlight with the Berlinale premiere of her new film Green Night on February 23, 2023. Once China’s highest-earning actress, Fan disappeared from public view after being caught up in a tax evasion scandal in July 2018. Chinese authorities ordered Fan to pay 892 million yuan (US$129 million) for tax evasion and other offences in October 2018. Fan plays a down-and-out migrant worker in the film by Chinese director Han Shuai making its debut at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival.
