In a press conference on August 31, 2022, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian extended the country’s condolences over the passing of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The last president of the former Soviet Union, who ended the Cold War, died at the age of 91 on August 30. China said Gorbachev had made “positive contributions” to Sino-Soviet relations.
