Human rights in China

UN human rights chief speaks with Xi Jinping amid criticism of China trip

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 25, 2022, via a video call during her six-day trip to China, which has drawn criticism from rights groups and the US. Bachelet said her exchanges with Xi and other officials had been a valuable opportunity to speak directly about human rights issues.

Bachelet will visit the western region of Xinjiang, where her office in 2021 said it believed the mostly ethnic Muslim Uygur people had been unlawfully detained, mistreated and engaged in forced-labour situations.. Her request for unfettered access to Xinjiang had been rejected on grounds of Covid-19 countermeasures.
