Nuclear steam solution to China’s smoggy winters gets a warm welcome

China’s northeastern city of Haiyang is testing a system designed to supply 200,000 people with heat sourced from a nuclear power plant to keep them warm through the chilly winter months. The pilot programme, which went online in November of 2021, uses heated water vapour produced at a nearby nuclear power plant. If successful, it could eventually be expanded to replace the city’s 12 coal-fired power plants and in turn help China achieve its zero-carbon emissions target.
