China increases coal production to ensure winter supplies, easing energy shortage

Chinese coal mining firms are increasing production ahead of winter, with some coal mining enterprises running at full capacity in a bid to ensure supplies. China said it has raised daily coal production by over 1 million tonnes (1.1 million tons) as of October 2021, in a bid to ease an energy shortage. This comes as world leaders gathered in Britain for climate talks at COP26. As the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, China sought to meet strict emissions targets that, coupled with soaring coal prices, resulted in widespread power cuts.
