Meng Wanzhou

‘Our China policy has not changed,’ says White House after release of Huawei CFO Meng

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on September 27, 2021, that the agreement that allowed for the release of Chinese tech company executive Meng Wanzhou has “zero impact” on US President Joe Biden’s China policy. The US Department of Justice struck a deal with the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co, who was detained in Canada on fraud charges, allowing her to return home to China on September 25. Psaki stressed the agreement was purely a “legal matter’ and rejected the suggestion of a prisoner swap for two Canadians held by China. After fighting extradition to the US for nearly three years, Meng admitted wrongdoing – but not guilt – to charges in the case relating to alleged violations of US sanctions on Iran.
