Former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig stood trial on spying charges in Beijing on March 22, 2021.
The proceeding follows the hearing of fellow Canadian Michael Spavor, who faces the same charges in the northeastern city of Dandong on March 19.
Canadian diplomat Jim Nickel and representatives from 26 countries gathered outside the Beijing court demanding access to the trial, which was held behind closed doors.
China detained Kovrig and Spavor in December 2018, in apparent retaliation for Canada’s arrest of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei.
