Villagers in southern China continue demonstrations to demand chief’s release

Tensions in the fishing village of Wukan are running high Monday as villagers consider how to win the release of Lin Zuluan, the local Communist Party secretary who was detained by city government over bribery allegation. But in a phone conversation with his wife, Lin called on locals to do what they think is right even as authorities urged them to refrain from petitioning. Lufeng government, which administer Wukan, meanwhile said about 85 per cent of illegally seized land has returned to Wukan villagers and the city government would follow up villagers’ claim over a 110,000 square metre land in dispute.
