Memorial services were held Tuesday morning on the Chinese side of the China-Nepal border for victims of last week’s deadly mudslide and flash floods. According to the regional government’s latest update, 16 people were killed when the mudslide slammed into Gyirong Port on August 26, and hundreds more are still missing. Meanwhile, Chinese rescue teams are racing to clear a key road leading to the port. When reopened, the road will allow more emergency personnel and vehicles to reach the disaster zone.
