Japan finds rare earths in deep-sea mud off remote island

Japan plans to conduct full-scale mining tests off the remote Pacific island of Minamitorishima in February 2027. A mining mission earlier this year retrieved rare earth samples just off the coast, 6 km (3.7 miles) below the surface.
