Kumamoto Castle wall collapses as Japan struck by 7.1-magnitude quake

A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake shook Japan’s southern Kyushu island on Tuesday, according to the Japan ‌Meteorological Agency. Authorities issued a tsunami warning for waves of up to 1 metre (3.28 feet) tall. The Japanese government immediately activated emergency earthquake alerts for seven prefectures, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki, as the tremor registered the maximum intensity of 7 on Japan’s Shindo seismic scale, indicating severe ground shaking.
