Robots to the rescue as South Korea battles severe labour crunch

The number of unstaffed cafes and ramen shops has surged in South Korea as rising labour costs and worker shortages push businesses across the country towards automation. There were an estimated 9,000 such stores nationwide in 2024. Self-service stores and robots are seen as solutions to problems related to the country’s ageing population and low birth rate.
