Nepali voters began casting their ballots in a high‑stakes general election on March 5, 2026. The polls come six months after Gen Z‑led protests toppled the government of former prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli. Many, including first‑time voters, say they want leaders who will tackle corruption, create jobs and develop the economy. Former Kathmandu mayor Balendra Shah is widely seen as a front runner for the top post.
