Japan’s parliament ended months of political vacuum by electing Sanae Takaichi as the country’s first female prime minister on October 21, 2025. Takaichi is an ultraconservative politician and hawkish on China. Her bid was secured following a last-minute alliance between her Liberal Democratic Party and the smaller Japan Innovation Party or Ishin no Kai.
