Sanae Takaichi becomes Japan’s first female prime minister
A newly forged coalition between Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party and the Ishin Party may lead to instability, posing a threat to her new administration.
Japan’s parliament ended months of political vacuum by electing Sanae Takaichi as the country’s first female prime minister on October 21, 2025. Takaichi is an ultraconservative politician and hawkish on China. Her bid was secured following a last-minute alliance between her Liberal Democratic Party and the smaller Japan Innovation Party or Ishin no Kai.
