Powerful 6.9-magnitude quake in the Philippines kills at least 60 people
Damage ‘could be worse than we think’, warns Cebu governor as rescue efforts continue in a province still reeling from a recent storm.
An offshore earthquake measuring magnitude 6.9 collapsed houses and other buildings in the central part of the Philippines late on September 30, 2025, killing at least 60 people and injuring many others. The powerful quake sent residents scrambling out of their homes and into darkness after the intense shaking cut power supplies, officials said. The epicentre of the earthquake was about 19km (12 miles) northeast of Bogo, a coastal city of about 90,000 people in Cebu province. As search and rescue operations got under way, provincial governor Pamela Baricuatro said the extent of the damage and injuries from the quake “could be worse” than expected.
