Does the military’s new expansion mark a return to Indonesia’s military rule?

Under President Prabowo Subianto, the Indonesian military has rapidly expanded its reach into civil society, a trend raising fears that the nation could be returning to the dark days of military rule under authoritarian leader Suharto. Is a recent bill authorising new roles for active duty officers an important step in modernising Indonesia’s armed forces? Or does it present a risk to one of the world’s largest – and youngest – democracies?
