South Korean President Yoon impeached over martial law debacle

Lawmakers in South Korea have voted 204 to 300 in favour of impeaching South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. The impeachment vote, which took place on December 14, 2024, came amid continued protests over the president’s attempt to impose martial law on December 3, 2024. The move plunged the nation into a constitutional crisis, with Yoon later issuing an apology but refusing to stand down. For several days, protesters have braved the cold in the capital Seoul to urge the president to stand down. The president would be immediately suspended from office while South Korea’s Constitutional Court deliberates on his future.
