Japan’s most powerful storm of the year so far has killed at least three people and left scores injured. Typhoon Shanshan packed gusts of around 252km/h (157mph), as it smashed into Japan’s main southern island of Kyushu early on August 29, 2024, before moving towards the main island of Honshu. Authorities warned of life-threatening flooding and landslides as heavy rain continued to pummel western Japan and evacuation orders were issued for millions of people in several prefectures.
