Japan has slammed what it called the first confirmed incursion by a Chinese military aircraft into its airspace. Calling it a “serious violation” of its sovereignty, Tokyo said it scrambled fighter jets after the two-minute incursion on August 26, 2024, by a Y-9 surveillance aircraft off the Danjo Islands in the East China Sea. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi condemned the move, saying China’s recent military activities near Japan have become “increasingly active”.
