A temple in southern India has introduced a lifelike robotic elephant to be used at rituals to prevent cruel treatment of live animals. The mechanical elephant was donated by the animal rights group Peta to the Pournami Kavu Temple in Thiruvananthapuram in the southwestern state of Kerala on June 22, 2024. The mechanical elephant, named Baladhasan, can move its ears and tail. It stands 3 metres (10ft) tall and weighs about 800kg (1,700lbs).
