Hindu-Muslims tensions over competing claims to the site of the Gyanvapi Mosque in India have been increasing over the years. In January 2024, a court ruled that Hindu priests were allowed to pray in the basement of the mosque. However, Hindu claims on contentious holy sites have been controversial, prompting worries among India’s Muslim minority, especially after Prime Minister Modi opened a Hindu temple on the site of a 16th century mosque.
