Former university teacher Murali Mohan Sastry left behind a comfortable life in southern India 11 years ago to move with his wife to die in the holy Hindu city of Varanasi. Home to 1 million people, the northern Indian city is also known as the City of Death and has achieved mythical status. By dying in Varanasi, Sastry believes that he will break the tenuous cycle of death and rebirth and reach salvation, a core belief that has drawn many Hindus to the city.
