‘Our resources are limited’: India’s battle to curb high birth rates in Bihar state
As India is estimated to overtake China as the world's most populous country, medical officials in Bihar state say they are fighting a losing battle to lower the region’s high fertility rate. Community mobilisers like Pratima Kumari travel to rural areas armed with free condoms and other forms of birth control to try and curb population growth in a state already strapped for resources. The government has also offered cash incentives to men and women who undergo sterilisation surgeries as well as for medical staff involved in doing the procedures, but Kumari says gender roles prove to be a barrier to their efforts.
