Chinese calligrapher keeps Lunar New Year tradition alive in Bangkok

For more than 30 years in Bangkok, Wichian Buasaeng has been carefully dipping his long brush into a can of thinner mixed with gold dust, before flicking the brush in a swift motion on a piece of red paper. Known as Chunlian, the art of writing Chinese characters in a pair of poetic lines has been a tradition to wish someone well during the Lunar New Year. But over time, there has been less demand for the couplets as Chinese traditions integrate into Thai culture. Wichian now worries the art will die with him in the city
