Ferdinand Marcos Jnr takes office as the Philippines’ new leader

Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jnr took his oath as the 17th president of the Philippines on June 30, 2022, after winning in a landslide election in May, with 31 million votes. He was sworn in at the National Museum of Fine Arts, the former site of the Philippine Congress, which his father, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Snr, shut down in 1972. In his inauguration speech, Marcos Jnr paid tribute to his father, who ruled the Southeast Asian country for two decades.
