Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jnr will be inaugurated as the next Philippine leader on June 30, 2022, following his landslide victory in May. He takes over from outgoing president Rodrigo Duterte, whose daughter Sara will be the next vice-president. Marcos Jnr’s win marks the return to power of one of the Philippines’ most notorious political dynasties. His father, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Snr, ruled the country under martial law amid rampant corruption and human rights abuses. But with a record 31 million votes garnered in the May presidential election, Marcos Jnr will now have to meet expectations from Philippine voters of a return to a “golden age” in the country.
