Sara Duterte sworn in early as vice-president of the Philippines

Sara Duterte-Carpio, daughter of outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, was sworn in early as the country’s 15th vice-president on June 19, 2022, days before she and the president take office. Political analysts said the break with tradition when both top leaders take oaths was a show of independence for Duterte-Carpio, who was joined on stage by her parents as she called for national unity following a divisive election campaign. The 44-year-old was the running mate of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jnr, who also won in the May 9 elections and will be sworn in as the country’s president on June 30, when their six-year term begins. Marcos Jnr, former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and current leader President Rodrigo Duterte were among the thousands who attended the ceremony.
