Sumo wrestling’s all-time greatest champion Hakuho is retiring at age 36, citing a persistent knee injury. The announcement brings to an end an illustrious career of over 1,000 wins in the ancient Japanese sport. Born Mönkhbatyn Davaajargal in Mongolia, he became known as Hakuho after entering the world of sumo after coming to Japan at age 15. He rose to the sport’s highest rank of yokozuna only seven years later. During his career, Hakuho won a record 45 tournaments – 13 more than anyone else in the sport’s history.
