Afghanistan after the US withdrawal

Scarred Afghans try to pick up the pieces after losing loved ones during last days of US withdrawal

Many Afghans continue to grieve for loved ones killed during the final days of the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. Among them are families who lost members during a suicide bombing that killed at least 170 people at Kabul airport, as thousands desperately sought to leave the country. Retaliatory US drone strikes that followed on August 29 ended up killing seven children and three adult members from the same family. As Afghans try to pick up the pieces following the death of loved ones, many remain uncertain about their future under the Taliban.
